How to Use the Google SERP Preview Tool

  1. Type or paste your title tag and meta description.
  2. Add the page URL and site name to see the full result.
  3. Watch the meters. Amber means close to the cut, red means it will likely be cut off.
  4. Switch to mobile to check the shorter description length.

Why Pixels Beat Character Counts

Google cuts titles by width. A title with lots of capitals and wide letters gets cut sooner than one with narrow letters, even at the same character count. We measure text at the size Google displays it: about 600 pixels for desktop titles and about 920 pixels for desktop descriptions, less on mobile.

Google doesn't publish these limits and they shift slightly over time, so use them as a guide and put the words that matter most first.

Writing a Snippet That Earns the Click

Start the title with what the person searched for, then what makes you the right choice, then your brand. In the description, answer the obvious next question: price, speed, area or proof. Google rewrites snippets it thinks don't match the search, and accurate, specific text gets rewritten less.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the ideal title length?

Most titles under about 55 to 60 characters fit, but measure in pixels to be sure. Shorter is fine when it's clear.

Why did Google change my title?

Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords or don't match the page. A clear title that matches your H1 usually sticks.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. It affects whether people click, which is why it's worth writing well.
