Instagram Business and Creator Profiles

When someone discovers your business through a Reel, the next thing they usually do is tap through to your profile. In a few seconds they decide whether you look credible, what you offer and how to reach you. Pew Research Center's 2025 survey found half of U.S. adults use Instagram, and eight in ten adults aged 18 to 29, so the profile works as a storefront for a large share of customers.

Account Types

Account type Suited to Key features
Personal Individuals Basic profile, no business insights or contact buttons
Creator Public figures, coaches, artists and personal brands Insights, flexible profile labels and creator tools
Business Shops, clinics, restaurants, service companies and brands Insights, contact and action buttons, ads and Facebook Page connection

Creator and business accounts are both called professional accounts. Switching is free and keeps your username, posts and followers. Most businesses should choose a business account.

Profile Essentials

  • Username Your @handle. Keep it close to the business name and consistent with Facebook and TikTok.
  • Name field The bold name above the bio. It is searchable within Instagram, so a short descriptor can help, such as Rosa's Bakery Austin.
  • Profile picture A logo or clear headshot that reads at thumbnail size.
  • Category The label shown under your name, such as Dentist or Hair Salon.
  • Bio Up to 150 characters saying what you do, who for and where, followed by the next step.
  • Contact options Phone, email and address shown as buttons.
  • Action button Options such as Book, Reserve or Order, connected to supported booking or ordering partners.

Links

Instagram lets every account add up to five links on the profile, each with its own title. Only the first shows in full, with the rest behind a tap. Put the link that leads straight to a booking, quote or shop page first. Add UTM tags so your analytics show visits coming from Instagram.

Highlights and Pinned Posts

Highlights are collections of past Stories saved at the top of the profile. Use them as quick answers to common questions: Services, Prices, Reviews, Before and After, Location. Pinned posts stay at the top of the grid. Pin your best introduction to the business, a strong customer result and a current offer.

Instagram's profile grid shows posts in a taller 3:4 shape, so check that thumbnails and cover images still look right when cropped.

Connecting a Facebook Page

Link the Instagram account to your Facebook Page through Accounts Center and add both to your business portfolio. This lets you manage messages and posts for both in Meta Business Suite and run Instagram ads from Ads Manager under your business identity.

Insights

Professional accounts include insights through the professional dashboard: accounts reached, engagement, follower growth, profile visits and link taps. The Social Media Analytics guide explains which of these to watch.

In Practice

Consider a med spa whose bio reads only "Beauty and wellness." Rewritten as "Injectables, facials and laser in Scottsdale. Free consultations below," with the first link going straight to the booking page and highlights for Services, Results and Reviews, the profile now answers the questions visitors used to ask by DM.
