What Llms.txt Is
llms.txt is a proposal from late 2024 for a Markdown file at the root of a site. It gives AI tools a short summary and a curated list of links, so they don't have to guess which of your pages matter. The format is simple: a heading with your name, a quoted summary, optional detail and then sections of links.
It's a proposal, not a standard, and support from the big AI companies is unclear. Treat it as cheap insurance that takes 10 minutes, not a replacement for well structured pages and a robots.txt that lets AI search bots in.
What to Put in It
Link the pages that answer what people ask about you: each service, prices or how quotes work, areas you serve, licensing and insurance, hours and how to book. Write a short note after each link saying what the page covers. Keep the summary factual. Marketing slogans don't help a machine decide whether to cite you.
