Ranking Signals on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok
Every social platform ranks posts using signals about what people engage with. Those signals explain why one post reaches thousands of people while another reaches a handful. This guide summarizes what the platforms and their leaders have said publicly.
Instagram ranks each surface differently. The feed favors accounts you interact with, Reels favor content that keeps people watching and sharing, and Explore favors posts similar to what you have engaged with. In January 2025 Instagram head Adam Mosseri named watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach as the three signals that matter most. Likes weigh slightly more for followers, and sends weigh slightly more for people who do not follow you yet.
Facebook's ranking looks at who posted, what kind of post it is, how people have interacted with similar posts and how likely each person is to comment, share or spend time, according to Meta's Transparency Center. Posts that start conversations and videos that hold attention tend to reach further. Posts that send people to other websites have historically been shown less.
TikTok
TikTok has described its recommendation system as driven by user interactions, video information such as captions, sounds and hashtags, and device and account settings. Follower count matters less than on other platforms, because each video is tested with a small audience and shown more widely when people watch, finish and share it. New accounts can therefore reach large audiences quickly.
Planning Your Posts
Short vertical video is the common thread. Each platform rewards content that holds attention and gives people a reason to respond, so the first seconds, on-screen captions and a clear prompt to comment or share carry real weight. Choose a posting rhythm you can keep for months.
Measure reach, watch time, sends and shares, profile visits and inquiries alongside follower count.
In Practice
Consider a restaurant in Miami that posts a 15-second Reel of a dish being plated, with the sound of the kitchen and a caption asking which sauce people would choose. Comments and sends push it to people who do not follow the account. A photo of the same dish with a menu link would typically reach a fraction of that audience.
