The Map Pack

For searches with local intent, Google shows a small group of businesses on a map above the regular results. These listings get a large share of clicks and calls because they show ratings, hours and directions at a glance. Ranking in them depends on relevance to the search, distance from the searcher and prominence, which is Google's word for how well known and well reviewed the business is.

The Google Business Profile

This free listing is the foundation. It should be verified, complete and accurate, with the right primary category, every service listed, real photos updated regularly, correct hours and a steady flow of reviews with replies. Posts and questions and answers keep it active.

Reviews

Reviews influence both ranking and the decision to call. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review in a few sentences. A slow, steady stream of real reviews beats a sudden burst, which can look suspicious.

Local Pages and Consistency

Your website should have a page for each location and each main service, with local detail. Your business name, address and phone number must match everywhere they appear online. Inconsistent details confuse both customers and Google.

A Monthly Routine

Add new photos, publish a post, request reviews from recent customers, reply to new reviews, check that hours and services are current and review your rankings across your service area rather than from one spot.

Putting This to Work

If you serve local customers and do nothing else, maintain your Google Business Profile. It is the highest-return hour you can spend each week.

In Practice

A tree service in Bucks County completes its profile, adds job photos every week and asks for reviews by text after each job. Within three months it appears in the map results for most towns it serves.
