TikTok Ads ยท Guide 2 of 4

TikTok Ads for Small Businesses

TikTok reaches people while they are relaxing and scrolling, which makes it different from search advertising. Ads work when they look and sound like the videos around them. This guide explains the formats, what good creative looks like and how a small business should test the platform.

The Formats

In-feed ads are full-screen vertical videos that appear between organic videos. Spark Ads boost an existing post from your account or a creator's account, so the ad carries the likes and comments of the original. TopView and takeover formats reach large audiences at higher cost and suit bigger brands. TikTok Shop ads connect ads directly to products for brands that sell on the platform.

Creative That Fits

The first two or three seconds decide whether anyone keeps watching. Successful ads open with a hook, show the product or service in use, use captions and natural sound and end with a clear next step. Polished studio footage often performs worse than a phone video of a real person. TikTok's own Creative Center shows top-performing ads by industry and region, which is a useful source of ideas.

Targeting and Automation

TikTok offers location, age, interest and behavior targeting, plus custom audiences from your website and customer lists. Its automated campaign option handles targeting and bidding using your conversion data, which works best once the pixel has gathered enough results.

Realistic Expectations

Costs per thousand impressions are often lower than on Meta, but the audience is younger and less likely to be searching for a service right now. Products that are easy to show, offers with a clear hook and businesses with local appeal tend to do well. Plan to test five to ten videos before judging the platform.

In Practice

A boxing gym in Jersey City films a trainer explaining the three mistakes beginners make, with captions and a trial offer at the end. The video runs as a Spark Ad to people within ten miles. Comments from the original post show on the ad, which adds social proof the gym did not have to buy.

Watch Out

Reposting a horizontal TV-style ad usually fails. Vertical, native video is the minimum requirement.
