Common Paid Advertising Problems and Fixes

Most paid advertising problems fall into a handful of patterns that show up again and again in owner forums and agency audits. This guide groups them by symptom, lists the usual causes and gives the first fixes to try before changing budgets or platforms.

Spending Money with No Leads

Usual causes Tracking that is broken or missing, so leads arrive but are never counted. Ads sending people to a home page with no clear next step. Broad keywords or audiences pulling in people who will never buy. A budget too small for the platform to learn.

Fixes Submit a test form and place a test call, then confirm each shows up in the ad platform within a day. Send ads to a page built for the offer, with the phone number and form visible on a phone screen without scrolling. Review search terms or audience breakdowns and cut the segments with spend and no results. Concentrate budget in fewer campaigns.

Plenty of Leads, Few Customers

Usual causes Forms so easy to complete that people submit them by accident. Offers that attract bargain hunters. Slow follow-up, since a lead contacted days later has often hired someone else. Platforms optimizing for form fills with no signal about which leads became customers.

Fixes Add one or two qualifying questions, such as service needed and ZIP code. On Meta lead ads, switch the form type to Higher intent. Call new leads within minutes during business hours. Send qualified leads and sales back to the platform as offline conversions so it learns which leads matter.

Costs Climbing Month After Month

Usual causes Seasonal competition, ad fatigue from showing the same creative too often, a shrinking audience or a landing page that slowed down after a site change.

Fixes Compare cost per result with the same month last year before reacting. Check frequency and refresh creative when it climbs while click-through rate falls. Test page speed on a phone. Widen audiences or add keywords only after the basics check out.

Platform Numbers That Do Not Match

Usual causes Each platform uses its own attribution window and counts view-through conversions, so several platforms claim the same customer. Analytics tools count sessions and platforms count clicks, so the two rarely agree.

Fixes Use your CRM or booking system as the record of customers and compare channels against it each month. Tag every ad link with consistent UTM parameters. The Measuring Paid Advertising Across Platforms guide covers this in depth.

Ads Not Delivering

Usual causes A bid or cost cap set below what the auction requires, an audience that is too narrow, a payment method that failed or frequent edits that keep resetting the learning phase.

Fixes Check the account for billing alerts first. Remove or raise bid caps. Broaden the audience or location radius. Leave campaigns unedited for at least a week once they are running.

A Locked or Hacked Ad Account

Usual causes Phishing messages posing as platform support, a single admin whose personal profile gets compromised, or unauthorized charges that trigger a payment hold. News reports from CBS News and ABC7 Chicago describe small businesses losing access to Pages and ad accounts for weeks after a hack.

Fixes Turn on two-factor authentication for every person with access. Keep at least two trusted people with full control. Remove former employees and contractors promptly. Treat any message demanding urgent action through a link as suspicious and go to the platform directly. If a takeover happens, use the platform's official hacked-account recovery page and contact your bank about any unauthorized charges.

In Practice

Consider a cleaning company whose Meta lead ads bring in 120 leads a month and books only 9 jobs. The owner finds most leads came from a one-tap form and many never answered the phone. Switching to a Higher intent form with a ZIP code question cuts leads to 70, and booked jobs rise to 16 because the team spends its time on people who meant to ask for a quote.
