Tracking Before Spend

Google's automated bidding learns from the conversions you report. If you report nothing, it optimizes for clicks. If you report every form fill including spam, it optimizes for spam. Tracking is the steering wheel of the account, and it has to be set up before the budget grows.

Actions Worth Tracking

Service businesses should track phone calls from ads, calls from the website, form submissions and booked appointments. Online stores should track purchases with their value, and often add-to-cart and checkout steps. Each of these becomes a conversion action in Google Ads, and you choose which ones count as the primary goal that bidding uses.

Calls Deserve Special Attention

For many local businesses the phone call is the real conversion. Google can track calls from ads directly and, with a small piece of code, calls from a number on your website. Setting a minimum call length of 30 to 60 seconds filters out wrong numbers and hang-ups.

Judging Lead Quality

A cheap lead that never books is expensive. Connect your ads to your booking system or CRM, mark which leads became customers and feed that back to Google where possible. Then judge campaigns by cost per booked job or cost per customer, which is the number that matters to your bank account.

Putting This to Work

Ask for one number each month: what did a customer cost through Google Ads. If your reports only show clicks and impressions, you are not seeing the result.

In Practice

An HVAC company tracked 80 leads a month at $45 each, which looked good until they matched leads to booked jobs and found only 20 became customers. Switching the account's primary goal to booked jobs raised cost per lead but cut cost per customer by a third.
