Placements, Ad Formats and Creative Specs
A single Meta campaign can show the same ad in a Facebook feed, an Instagram Story, a Reel and inside third-party apps. Each spot has its own shape, viewing habits and best format. This guide covers where ads appear, which formats to use and how to prepare creative that looks right everywhere.

Placements
A placement is a location where your ad can appear. Ads Manager groups them roughly as follows.
| Group | Examples | How people view it |
|---|---|---|
| Feeds | Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Marketplace, Explore | Scrolling, often with sound off |
| Stories | Facebook Stories, Instagram Stories | Full screen, tapping through quickly |
| Reels | Facebook Reels, Instagram Reels | Full screen vertical video, often with sound |
| In-stream and search | Video ads within Facebook videos, Facebook search results | Inside other content |
| Messages | Ads in Messenger | Inside the inbox |
| Apps and sites | Audience Network | Inside third-party mobile apps |
Advantage+ placements, previously called automatic placements, lets Meta spread budget across all of them and shift spend toward whatever performs. Manual placements let you choose. Meta recommends Advantage+ placements for most campaigns because a wider pool of placements gives the system more ways to find low-cost results. It works best when the creative is prepared for every shape.
Ad Formats
- Single image One photo or graphic. Fast to produce and useful for offers and announcements.
- Single video The default for Reels and Stories and the format most likely to hold attention.
- Carousel Up to ten swipeable cards, each with its own image or video and link. Good for showing several services, before and after sequences or steps in a process.
- Collection A cover image or video above a grid of products that opens into a full-screen storefront. Built for retailers.
- Catalog ads Ads generated automatically from a product catalog, showing each person items they viewed or similar ones. Formerly called dynamic ads.
Text Elements
Each ad has primary text above the media, a headline below it, an optional description and a call-to-action button such as Book Now, Get Quote or Shop Now. On mobile, only the first line or two of primary text shows before a See more link, so lead with the offer.
Sizes That Work Everywhere
| Placement group | Recommended shape | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Feeds | 4:5 vertical or 1:1 square | 4:5 takes up more of a phone screen |
| Stories and Reels | 9:16 full vertical | Keep text and logos away from the top and bottom edges, where profile names and buttons sit |
| Right column and search | 1:1 square | Crops appear smaller, so keep text minimal |
Upload both a 4:5 and a 9:16 version of each ad and use placement asset customization in Ads Manager to assign them. One file stretched or cropped by Meta often cuts off faces, text or the product.
Video Tips for Every Placement
Instagram head Adam Mosseri has said roughly half of video impressions on the platform are viewed with the sound off. Burn captions into the video or use auto captions, show the product or result in the first seconds and put the key message on screen as text.
In Practice
Consider a med spa promoting a seasonal facial. It films one 20-second vertical clip of a treatment, adds on-screen captions, and exports a 9:16 cut for Stories and Reels and a 4:5 cut for feeds. A carousel of three before and after images runs alongside it. With Advantage+ placements on, Meta shifts most of the budget to Instagram Reels, where the booking cost comes in lowest.
Placement names, sizes and format options change often. Confirm details in the sources below before producing creative.
