Short-Form Video That Works
Short vertical video is now the most effective content format for most businesses, both organically and in ads. It does not require a studio. It requires an understanding of how people watch and a repeatable process. This guide covers both.

The Hook
The first two seconds decide whether a video gets watched. Strong openings state a problem, show a surprising result, ask a question the viewer has or start mid-action. Weak openings begin with logos, slow intros or the business name.
Structure
A reliable structure is hook, context, payoff, call to action. Keep most videos between 15 and 45 seconds. Show the thing instead of describing it, use on-screen captions because many people watch without sound and end with one clear next step.
Formats That Work for Businesses
Process videos that show how work gets done. Before and after transformations. Short answers to common customer questions. Behind-the-scenes clips of your team. Customer stories told in their own words, often called user-generated content or UGC when creators produce them.
Production
A recent phone, a small light and a clip-on microphone produce usable footage. Film vertically, keep the subject in the middle third so crops for other platforms work and record more than you need. Edit with captions, trim pauses and export in 9:16 for Reels and TikTok, with a 1:1 or 4:5 version for feeds.
Repurposing
One shoot should produce many pieces. A ten-minute interview with a provider can become eight short answers. A single project can produce a process video, a before and after and a customer quote. Batching a month of content in one session is how small teams stay consistent.
In Practice
A tree service company films a crew removing a large oak with a phone on a tripod. The edit opens on the moment the trunk drops, cuts to a three-second clip of the equipment and ends with the cleaned yard and a line about free estimates. It becomes the company's best-performing ad and its most shared organic post.
Music licensed for personal use on TikTok or Instagram is often not licensed for ads. Use the platform's commercial sound library for paid campaigns.
