Performance Max and Automated Bidding
What Google's automated campaigns do well, where they struggle and how to keep control.

Performance Max Defined
Performance Max is a campaign type that uses Google's automation to show ads across search, YouTube, Gmail, Discover, Maps and the display network from a single campaign. You provide images, videos, headlines, descriptions, a budget and a conversion goal. Google decides where and to whom the ads appear.
Where It Helps
It works best for online stores with a product feed and strong purchase tracking, where Google has a lot of conversion data to learn from. It can also help businesses that want reach beyond search without managing several campaign types.
Where It Struggles
Performance Max reports less detail than search campaigns, which makes waste harder to find. It can spend heavily on branded searches that would have converted anyway. For service businesses with few conversions, it often lacks the data it needs to learn and produces low-quality leads.
Staying in Control
Give it clean conversion data, exclude your brand name so you can measure the real effect, review the insights report for the searches and placements it chose and keep a dedicated search campaign for your highest-intent terms. Automated bidding strategies such as target cost per action and target return on ad spend work the same way: they need accurate conversions and enough volume to learn.
Putting This to Work
Automation is a tool, not a strategy. It performs in proportion to the quality of the conversion data you feed it.
In Practice
An online furniture store runs Performance Max with its product feed and sees a healthy return. A chiropractor tries the same campaign type with 12 conversions a month and gets leads that mostly never book. The difference is data.
