Choosing Between Google, Meta and TikTok Ads

Google, Meta and TikTok all sell ad space, yet they reach people at very different moments. Google shows ads to people searching for something right now. Meta and TikTok show ads to people scrolling through content, many of whom had no plan to buy anything that day. Picking a starting channel comes down to how your customers find businesses like yours.

Capturing Demand and Creating It

Marketers describe search advertising as demand capture. Someone types emergency plumber near me or best family dentist in Austin, and your ad appears at the moment of need. The intent already exists and the ad competes to win it.

Social advertising is closer to demand creation. A person watching Reels or TikTok videos sees a short clip of a new pilates studio, a bakery's weekend special or a mattress with a 100-night trial. They were not looking, so the ad has to earn attention first and interest second. This reaches people earlier, before they search, and it often costs less per impression, while each click tends to carry less immediate intent.

Google Ads

Google Ads covers Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display and Performance Max campaigns. Search campaigns are the usual starting point for service businesses because people searching for a plumber, a lawyer or a roof repair tend to call quickly. Shopping campaigns suit retailers with a product catalog. YouTube reaches people with video and works more like social advertising.

Google tends to fit businesses whose customers search for the service by name, urgent needs such as repairs and emergencies, and higher-ticket services where one customer covers many clicks.

Meta Ads

Meta Ads places ads across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network. Its strength is reach and targeting by interests, behavior and lookalike audiences built from your own customers. Lead ads with instant forms let people request a quote without leaving the app, which suits appointment-based businesses.

Meta tends to fit visual products, local businesses with a broad customer base, offers and promotions, and businesses that already have customer lists to build audiences from.

TikTok Ads

TikTok Ads places video in the For You feed and across TikTok's partner apps. Ads that look and sound like native TikTok content usually perform best, which makes creative production the main cost of entry. TikTok's audience skews younger than Facebook's, according to Pew Research Center's 2025 survey of U.S. adults.

TikTok tends to fit consumer products and services with a visual or entertaining angle, brands aiming at adults under 35 and businesses able to produce frequent short videos.

Picking a Starting Channel

If your customers usually... Start with Then add
Search when they need you, often urgently Google Search Meta remarketing to people who visited your site
Buy on impulse or discover you through photos and video Meta TikTok once you have video that performs
Are mostly under 35 and respond to video TikTok or Meta Reels Google Search for branded searches
Compare several providers over weeks Google Search Meta and YouTube to stay visible during the comparison

With a small budget, one channel run well beats three channels run thinly. Each platform needs enough data to learn who responds, and splitting a small budget slows that learning on all of them.

Running More Than One Channel

Channels influence each other. A person might see a TikTok video on Monday, search your business name on Google on Thursday and book through your website on Friday. Each platform may claim credit for that one booking. The Measuring Paid Advertising Across Platforms guide covers how to read results when channels overlap.

In Practice

Consider an HVAC company in Phoenix that gets most of its work from urgent repair calls in summer. Google Search ads on terms like ac repair near me capture those calls directly, so Google is its first channel. A boutique fitness studio in the same city sells an experience people rarely search for by name. A short Instagram Reel of a full class with an introductory offer gives it far more reach per dollar, so Meta is its first channel.

Key Facts

  • In the same survey, 24% of U.S. adults said they use TikTok daily, with far higher daily use among adults aged 18 to 29.
  • A large field experiment at eBay found that paid search ads on the company's own brand name produced little additional revenue, because most of those searchers would have arrived anyway.
