Google Search Console Reports That Matter for Business Owners

The handful of Search Console reports a business owner needs, and a 20-minute monthly routine.

Key Takeaways

  • Search Console shows how Google sees your site: which searches show it, which pages get clicks and which pages Google cannot index.
  • The Performance report, the branded queries filter, Page indexing and Core Web Vitals cover most of what a business needs.
  • Clicks and impressions from AI Mode are counted inside the normal Performance totals.
  • A 20-minute monthly check catches most problems before they cost leads.

Google Search Console is the free tool that shows how your site performs in Google Search, and most businesses need only four parts of it: the Performance report, the branded queries filter, the Page indexing report and the Core Web Vitals report. Checking those once a month takes about 20 minutes and catches the problems that most often cost search traffic, from pages dropping out of Google to slow mobile pages.

Setting Up

Add your site as a Domain property, which covers every version of the site (http, https, www and subdomains), and verify it through your domain's DNS settings. Submit your XML sitemap under Sitemaps. Add your web developer or agency as users with their own logins, and keep ownership with the business. Link Search Console to GA4 so search data appears alongside site behavior.

The Performance Report

The Performance report shows clicks, impressions, average click-through rate and average position for the searches that show your site. Use the tabs to see results by query, page, country and device.

How to use it. Set the date range to the last three months compared with the previous period. Sort queries by clicks to see what drives traffic, then by impressions to find searches where you appear often but get few clicks, which usually point to titles or descriptions that need work.

Google counts clicks, impressions and positions from AI Mode inside these totals and does not separate them out (Search Engine Land).

The Branded Queries Filter

Google added a branded queries filter to the Performance report in November 2025 and later made it available to all eligible sites (Search Engine Land). It splits searches into branded (your business name and variations) and non-branded (everything else). Find it under Add filter, then Query.

Non-branded clicks show people finding you without already knowing your name, which is the clearest measure of SEO progress. Branded clicks rise and fall with word of mouth, advertising and reputation. Google notes the filter uses automated detection and may misclassify some queries, and that it may not appear for sites with few branded searches.

Page Indexing

The Page indexing report shows which pages Google has indexed and why others are not indexed.

Status What it usually means What to do
Crawled, currently not indexed Google saw the page and chose not to index it, often because it is thin or similar to other pages Improve, merge or remove the page
Discovered, currently not indexed Google knows the URL but has not crawled it yet Strengthen internal links to it
Excluded by noindex tag The page tells Google not to index it Remove the tag if the page should rank
Not found (404) The URL no longer exists Redirect if it had value or links
Duplicate without user-selected canonical Google sees the page as a copy of another Set a canonical or consolidate

Core Web Vitals

This report groups your URLs as good, needing improvement or poor on loading, responsiveness and visual stability, using data from real Chrome users. Focus on mobile, and open PageSpeed Insights for any URL group marked poor to see the specific causes.

URL Inspection

Paste any URL into the search bar at the top to see whether it is indexed, when Google last crawled it and how the page renders. After fixing a page, use Request indexing to ask Google to recrawl it.

Links

The Links report shows which sites link to you and which of your pages are linked most, both externally and internally. Pages with few internal links often struggle to rank.

A 20-Minute Monthly Routine

  1. Performance: compare last month with the month before and the same month last year.
  2. Branded queries filter: check non-branded clicks.
  3. Page indexing: look for new errors or a jump in excluded pages.
  4. Core Web Vitals: check for new poor URLs.
  5. Manual actions and Security issues: confirm both are clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Search Console data the same as GA4 data?

No. Search Console counts Google searches and clicks, while GA4 counts visits to your site from every source. The numbers rarely match exactly.

Why do some pages say crawled but not indexed?

Google decided not to index them, often because they are thin, very similar to other pages or not linked well internally.

Can I see AI Overview data in Search Console?

AI Mode and AI Overview activity counts toward the normal Performance totals and cannot be isolated there.
