On This Page
The Google Ads changes that matter most for lead generation accounts in 2026 all point toward AI Max for Search. It became widely available this year, Google announced ads in AI Mode that run through AI Max and Performance Max, and Dynamic Search Ads are moving into it. For a typical service business, the practical job is the same after each change: keep conversion tracking accurate, review search terms and landing pages every two weeks and use exclusions where automation strays.

Dynamic Search Ads Moving to AI Max
Google's updated AI Max documentation describes the transition plan for Dynamic Search Ads advertisers and adds reporting views for search terms and landing pages, plus options to exclude underperforming terms and URLs (Search Engine Land).
What to check. Before the switch, record current Dynamic Search Ads performance by landing page. After it, review AI Max search terms and final URL choices weekly for the first month and exclude careers, blog and other pages that should not receive ad traffic.
AI Max Reporting Guidance (June)
Google's guidance recommends reviewing search term and landing page performance every one to two weeks and using negative keywords sparingly. For lead generation accounts with limited budgets, we recommend reviewing more often in the first month, since irrelevant matches cost a larger share of a small budget.
Google Marketing Live (May)
Google's Google Marketing Live 2026 announcements included:
- Ads in AI Mode, new placements inside Google's conversational search, available through AI Max and Performance Max
- AI Brief, a way to guide AI Max with plain-language instructions about the brand, starting with Search campaigns
- AI Max for Shopping, bringing AI Max matching to Shopping campaigns
- Data Manager, a hub for connecting first-party data sources to Google's ad products
What it means for lead generation. Eligibility for new AI placements runs through AI Max and Performance Max, which raises the stakes on accurate conversion tracking. Send qualified leads and sales back to Google through enhanced conversions for leads or offline imports so automation learns which leads became customers. Our guide to enhanced conversions for leads covers the setup.
AI Max for Search Widely Available (April)
AI Max adds broader matching, keywordless matching, text customization and final URL expansion to standard Search campaigns. Our guide to AI Max for Search explains when to turn it on and how to keep it in check.
