ChatGPT Ads Explained for Small and Local Businesses
Where ChatGPT ads appear, how buying and tracking work and whether your business should test them this year.
Key Takeaways
- ChatGPT ads appear for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans in the U.S., labeled and kept apart from ChatGPT's answers.
- You buy them through partners or OpenAI's beta self-serve Ads Manager, on CPM or CPC bidding, with no published minimum spend.
- Set up OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API before launch, because a test without conversion data can't tell you anything useful.
- Work out the highest cost per click you can afford before you start, then judge the test on cost per customer.

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements shown below ChatGPT's answers to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans in the U.S., and businesses of any size can now sign up to run them through OpenAI's beta Ads Manager. They're worth a small, tracked test if you sell something people research and compare before they buy. If most of your customers find you through urgent local searches, such as an emergency repair, Google Search and your Business Profile still deserve your first dollar.
Where ChatGPT Ads Appear
OpenAI announced its approach to advertising on January 16, 2026. Ads show at the bottom of an answer when there's a sponsored product or service relevant to the current conversation, and they're clearly labeled and separated from the answer itself. On October 5, 2026, OpenAI added a visual ad format that appears during image generation, with testing starting later that month in the U.S. with a first group of advertisers.
| Placement | Who sees it | Status in October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsored listing below an answer | Logged-in adults on Free and Go in the U.S. | Buyable through partners and the beta Ads Manager |
| Visual ad during image generation | Free and Go users in the U.S. | Testing from late October with a first group of advertisers |
| Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans | Nobody | OpenAI says these plans won't include ads |
OpenAI says ads don't change what ChatGPT answers, and it doesn't show them to users who say they're under 18 or whom it predicts are under 18.
Topics Where Ads Won't Run
OpenAI says ads aren't eligible to appear near sensitive or regulated topics, and it names health, mental health and politics. That matters if you run a clinic, a medspa, a therapy practice or a wellness brand. Even if your ad is approved, the conversations where your customers ask health questions are the ones where ads stay off. For those businesses, being recommended in ChatGPT's answers is the realistic route, and that's an organic job covered in our guide to how brands get recommended in AI search and the focus of AI search optimization.
Buying ChatGPT Ads Through Ads Manager
Since May 5, 2026, you can create ChatGPT ads through partners or the beta self-serve Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, which is opening to advertisers gradually. In Ads Manager you add payment details, set budgets, bids and pacing, upload ads, launch campaigns and see performance. OpenAI's partners are large agency groups such as Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP and ad tech companies such as Adobe, Criteo and StackAdapt. They mostly serve big brands, so in our view a small business will usually buy direct.
The first pilot was sold on CPM, meaning you paid per thousand impressions. OpenAI then added CPC bidding, where you're charged only when someone clicks. For a first test, CPC is the safer choice because you pay for visits to your site, and impressions that nobody clicks cost you nothing.
- Sign up at ads.openai.com under the business that owns the website you'll send traffic to
- Install OpenAI's pixel or connect its Conversions API before the first ad goes live
- Choose CPC bidding for the test
- Build a landing page that picks up where a research conversation would leave off, with prices, comparisons and proof
- Tag the landing page URL with UTM parameters so GA4 separates paid ChatGPT visits from organic ones
- Set a fixed test budget and a date 4 to 6 weeks out to judge it
ChatGPT Ads Cost and Budgets
OpenAI hasn't published prices, minimum budgets or average costs per click for ChatGPT ads. Any number you see quoted elsewhere is somebody's estimate. The useful question is how much you can afford to pay per click, and you can answer that before you spend anything.
Multiply the most you'd pay for a new customer by your landing page's conversion rate and by the share of leads you close. The result is your break-even cost per click. These scenarios are illustrative, so swap in your own numbers.
| Most you'd pay per customer | Visitors who become leads | Leads you close | Break-even cost per click |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | 2% | 50% | $1.00 |
| $200 | 3% | 25% | $1.50 |
| $400 | 4% | 30% | $4.80 |
| $800 | 5% | 20% | $8.00 |
After the first week, compare the cost per click Ads Manager reports with your break-even figure. If it's well above, the test needs a better landing page or a better offer before it needs more budget. If you already run Google Ads, our breakdown of Google Ads costs uses the same math, which makes them easy to compare.
Tracking ChatGPT Ad Results
OpenAI launched a Conversions API and pixel-based measurement for purchases, leads and sign-ups, and it says advertisers get aggregated results without access to individual conversations. In October it added data connections through Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp along with attribution partners such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Northbeam and DV Rockerbox. It also started early geo-based incrementality tests with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic.
A small business doesn't need those partners to run a fair test. You need 3 things working before launch. The pixel or Conversions API has to record your real conversion, whether that's a purchase, a booked call or a completed form. Your landing page URLs need UTM tags so GA4 lead tracking shows ChatGPT ad visits apart from the organic visits ChatGPT already sends. And your CRM or booking system should tell you which of those leads became customers.
Early Results OpenAI Has Shared
OpenAI's October announcement included results reported by its measurement partners. WeightWatchers' attributed cost per acquisition was 15.3% lower than its blended paid search benchmark, measured by DV Rockerbox. Triple Whale found 93% of Portland Leather's visitors from ChatGPT ads were new to the brand.
These are a handful of examples chosen by the platform selling the ads, from national brands with large budgets. Use them as a reason to test, and let your own cost per customer decide whether you keep going.
Businesses That Should Test First
| Business type | Fit for a test now | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Online stores with considered purchases | Strong | People ask ChatGPT to compare products before buying |
| Services people research first, such as renovations, wedding vendors or courses | Strong | Long research conversations give ads relevant context |
| Software and business services | Strong | Buyers use ChatGPT to shortlist tools and providers |
| Local services with urgent demand | Weak | People call the first good result on Google instead of researching |
| Clinics, therapists and health brands | Weak | Ads aren't eligible near health conversations |
| Businesses without conversion tracking | Wait | You won't be able to judge the test |
OpenAI hasn't published targeting options such as a location radius. If you serve one city, check what Ads Manager offers for location before you commit budget, because clicks from outside your area are wasted.
ChatGPT Ads Compared With Google Search Ads
| ChatGPT ads | Google Search ads | |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers the ad | The topic of the current conversation | The search someone types or says |
| Bidding | CPM or CPC | CPC with manual or Smart Bidding options |
| Controls | Few published so far, plus Negative Phrases for qualifying advertisers | Keywords, match types, negatives, locations and schedules |
| Tracking | OpenAI pixel and Conversions API | Google tag, enhanced conversions and GA4 |
| Maturity | Beta, with formats still being added | Mature, with years of benchmarks |
Google Search catches people at the moment they're ready to act. ChatGPT ads reach people earlier, while they're still weighing options. That's why the test budget should come from money you'd otherwise spend on new channels, and the paid advertising campaigns that already work for you should keep their budgets while the test runs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does everyone using ChatGPT see ads?
No. OpenAI says ads appear only on the Free and Go plans, and Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions don't include them. Users who are under 18, or whom OpenAI predicts are under 18, don't see ads.
Do ChatGPT ads change ChatGPT's answers?
OpenAI says advertising doesn't influence ChatGPT's answers and that ads are labeled and kept separate from them. Paying for ads won't get your business recommended in the answer itself.
Can advertisers see what people typed into ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says it keeps conversations private from advertisers and doesn't sell user data to advertisers. You get aggregated performance results and the conversions your pixel or Conversions API records.
Is there a minimum budget for ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI hasn't published one. Set your own test budget based on your break-even cost per click and enough clicks to judge the result, usually a few hundred visits.
Can I run ChatGPT ads outside the U.S.?
OpenAI's announcements so far describe ads in the U.S. Check Ads Manager for the markets available to your account when you sign up.
